Giovanna Baglione, Sacred and Profane Love
1612
This was painted in 1602-3, before Giovanni Baglione sued Caravaggio & friends for libel in the summer of 1603. It was done in response to Caravaggio’s Love Conquers All, and for an equally powerful patron as Caravaggio’s patron. It is one of my favorite artistic competitions ever. Refer to Helen Langdon & Andrew Graham-Dixon’s biographies of Caravaggio. Both offer excellent discussions of the painting and the trial.
Wow. I can definitely see how it was a response to Love Conquers All.
